Historical Perspective ...
Recognizing the fact that immigrant women face extraordinary difficulties and discrimination, the Government of Canada organized Conference for Immigrant Women in Toronto, Ontario, in March 1981. The purpose of that conference was to bring immigrant women, community organizers and government decision-makers to discuss various problems facing immigrant women. As a result of this conference, a National Coalition of Immigrant Women was formed, now known as the National Organization of Immigrant and Visible Minority Women of Canada (NOIVMWC). Following that, a provincial branch was established in Newfoundland and Labrador during December 1982, to be known as the “Newfoundland and Labrador Immigrant Women's Follow-up-Committee”. Later this became known as “Multicultural Women's Organization of Newfoundland and Labrador” (MWONL).
